The Sumitomo Spirit
The Sumitomo Spirit has its roots in the guiding principles of Monjuin Shiigaki the Aphorisms of Monjuin written by Masatomo Sumitomo (1585-1652), founder of the House of Sumitomo. These aphorisms set forth the ideal of conducting business with integrity and prudence.
Over the centuries, as Sumitomo grew primarily through its copper operations, this spirit evolved and deepened. Its core values were formally established in the "Business Principles of 1891.
Today, the Sumitomo Spirit reflects not only these principles but also the wisdom and beliefs of generations of Sumitomo leaders, preserved through significant remarks and the reasoning behind key business decisions. It remains the cornerstone of our Group's management philosophy and the foundation for every decision made by our employees across all operations.
